Program Overview: Sports & Exercise Medicine MMedSc
The MMedSc in Sports & Exercise Medicine at University College Cork is designed to give clinicians a deeper understanding of sports medicine, sports injuries, and exercise medicine. This programme covers the evidence base for the management of sports medicine and musculoskeletal injuries while emphasising the vital role of physical activity in the prevention and treatment of chronic illness and disease.
The programme educates highly skilled clinicians and practitioners to manage sports injuries and address the growing epidemic of lifestyle-related diseases and conditions. Exercise as Medicine (Chronic Disease Management)

Admission Requirements
Admission to the MMedSc in Sports & Exercise Medicine is competitive and is based on academic achievement and relevant work experience. Applicants who do not meet the standard entry requirements may be considered under Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) following a review by the course committee.
Academic Requirements
- Medical GraduatesAn Honours Medical qualification of the NUI or an equivalent institution, in good standing with their national regulatory body (e.g. Irish Medical Council or equivalent)
- Physiotherapy GraduatesA Second Class Honours Grade I or higher in a primary honours degree (NFQ Level 8) in Physiotherapy, with membership of or eligibility for the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists
- Recognition of Prior LearningApplicants who do not meet standard requirements may be considered under RPL following review by the course committee and approval of the College of Medicine and Health Executive Committee
- Selection CriteriaSelection is based on academic achievement and relevant work experience; some applicants may be invited for interview
- Vetting RequirementAcceptance into the programme is subject to Garda Vetting
