Program Overview — Carpentry and Renovation Technician
The Carpentry and Renovation Technician program at Conestoga College prepares you for a career in the residential and light commercial construction sector. You will learn how to apply technical skills and hands-on knowledge to solve a wide range of construction and renovation challenges.
In the first year, you focus on the interior and exterior construction of residential and light commercial buildings, building a strong foundation in carpentry fundamentals. The second year shifts to renovation of existing structures, project planning, construction of common outdoor structures, and business operations.
Students can opt into the co-op stream to gain valuable workplace experience and network with future employers before completing the program. Graduates may be eligible for exemption from Level 1 in-school apprenticeship training as a General Carpenter, giving you a head start in your trades career.

Introduction to Carpentry and Construction
Semester 1Students explore the history, origins, and background of the carpentry trade, along with methods and materials used in the construction of forms for footings, flatwork, low-rise foundation walls, and framing.
Residential Framing and Exterior Construction
Semester 1-2Covers the principles and practical skills of residential framing, exterior wall systems, roof construction, and sheathing techniques for light commercial and residential buildings.
Interior Finishing and Building Systems
Semester 2Focuses on interior finishing work including drywall installation, trim carpentry, flooring, cabinetry, and integration of building systems within residential structures.
Renovation and Architectural Styles
Semester 3Students study various architectural styles including historical building construction practices, materials, and renovation construction health and safety considerations for existing structures.
Project Planning and Outdoor Structures
Semester 3-4Covers project planning methodologies, estimating, and the design and construction of common outdoor structures such as decks, fences, and pergolas.
Construction Safety and Business Operations
Semester 4Addresses health and safety practices in accordance with current legislation, along with the fundamentals of operating a construction business including bidding, contracts, and client relations.
