Sociology
Beykent University, Turkey
The Department of Sociology offers a comprehensive 4-year undergraduate program designed to provide students with a deep understanding of social structures, cultural dynamics, and the complex interactions that shape human societies. As human-centered research gains prominence worldwide, sociology has emerged as a critical discipline for analyzing and interpreting social change, inequality, and collective behavior in a rapidly evolving global context. The program aims to train analytical, open-minded, and socially responsible individuals who can contribute to the understanding and resolution of contemporary social issues.
The curriculum of the Sociology Department encompasses a wide range of theoretical and practical topics. Students engage with classical and contemporary sociological theories, learn about research methodologies, and develop skills in both qualitative and quantitative analysis. These foundational elements are complemented by specialized courses focusing on pressing global and national issues such as migration and refugee studies, radical political ideologies, identity politics, gender studies, social stratification, urbanization, and the sociological dimensions of religion, education, and family life.
Particular emphasis is placed on examining current social problems created by modern-day challenges—such as economic inequality, environmental crises, political polarization, and cultural conflicts—and exploring ways to address them through policy, activism, and community engagement. Courses on conflict resolution, social policy, and human rights encourage students to think critically and ethically about the role of individuals and institutions in fostering social justice.
Throughout their studies, students are trained to conduct independent research, analyze complex social data, and interpret findings with clarity and objectivity. Practical applications are encouraged through fieldwork, internships, and community-based research projects, giving students the opportunity to apply their academic knowledge in real-world settings and interact with diverse populations.
The department fosters a dynamic learning environment, supported by experienced academic staff and enriched by seminars, guest lectures, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The goal is to cultivate a sociological imagination in students—an ability to see the connections between personal experiences and larger social forces—and to prepare them for meaningful careers in academia, government, NGOs, media, public policy, and the private sector.
The language of instruction in the Sociology Department is Turkish, and the program is continuously updated to reflect contemporary developments in both national and global sociological research. Graduates of the program are well-equipped to pursue advanced studies or professional roles that require strong analytical thinking, cultural awareness, and a deep commitment to understanding the human condition.
