Founded in 1457, the University of Freiburg is one of Germany's oldest and most renowned universities. With its eleven faculties, approximately 240 degree programs, and 440 full professorships and 32 junior professorships, it boasts a broad, interdisciplinary spectrum with high-quality research and teaching. The University of Freiburg regularly ranks among the top universities in prestigious rankings: In the Shanghai Ranking, for example, it ranks fifth in Germany and is listed among the 101-150 best universities worldwide.

Around 24,500 people are currently studying at the university, 3,660 are pursuing doctorates, and a total of 6,700 are employed, including 5,500 in academic positions. Twenty-three Nobel laureates are associated with the University of Freiburg. In 2023, the university raised €219 million in third-party funding and received 16 ERC grants between 2019 and 2023. Two Clusters of Excellence are currently being funded at the University of Freiburg. Within the current Excellence Strategy of the German federal and state governments, under the "Clusters of Excellence" funding line, the University of Freiburg has submitted two applications for new Clusters of Excellence and applications for extensions for the two existing Clusters of Excellence – embedded in the overall strategic process "University of Freiburg 2030."
