English Interpreter and Translation

The English Translation and Interpreting Department offers a comprehensive four-year undergraduate program designed to train highly qualified translators and interpreters proficient in both English and Turkish. The program aims to develop students’ strong verbal and written communication skills, enabling them to perform accurate and culturally sensitive translations across various contexts. Graduates are equipped not only with linguistic competence but also with deep cultural awareness, allowing them to effectively bridge language barriers and convey meaning with nuance and precision. Additionally, the program prepares students to translate between Turkish and foreign languages other than English, broadening their professional versatility.

The curriculum combines rigorous language training with specialized courses in translation theory, practice, and interpreting techniques. Students study advanced English linguistics, syntax, semantics, and stylistics alongside Turkish language studies, ensuring balanced bilingual proficiency. Courses cover consecutive and simultaneous interpreting, literary and technical translation, localization, terminology management, and cross-cultural communication. Emphasis is placed on developing critical thinking, research skills, and ethical awareness essential to professional translation and interpreting.

To complement theoretical learning, the program incorporates practical workshops, internships, and real-life translation assignments, providing hands-on experience in diverse fields such as legal, medical, business, and audiovisual translation. Students also receive training in computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools and digital technologies widely used in the industry, enhancing their technical competencies and employability.

The language of instruction is English, and all students begin their studies with a mandatory English Preparatory Class designed to strengthen their language skills and prepare them for the academic program. However, students who demonstrate sufficient proficiency by successfully passing the Level Determination and Proficiency Exam are allowed to skip the preparatory year and start their studies directly in the first year.
