University of Westminster: A Pioneer in London Higher Education

The University of Westminster is a public university based in the heart of London, United Kingdom. Founded in 1838 as the Royal Polytechnic Institution by Sir George Cayley, it was the first polytechnic to open in London and one of the first in the UK, originally established to educate the working people of London.

Today the university is organised into three colleges and 12 schools, offering career-focused undergraduate, postgraduate, and professional courses across a wide range of disciplines including media, architecture, business, law, and the sciences. It is home to over 21,000 students from more than 160 countries and holds membership in the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the European University Association, and EQUIS.

Westminster has a proud history of firsts and innovation. In 1841 it opened the first public photographic portrait studio in Europe, and in 1896 it hosted the first UK public moving picture display organised by the Lumiere brothers at its Regent Street Cinema, now recognised as the birthplace of British cinema.
