Automotive Engineering
Program Overview: BEng Automotive Engineering at Warwick
The BEng Automotive Engineering at the University of Warwick is delivered jointly by the School of Engineering and WMG (Warwick Manufacturing Group), combining a firm grounding in the principles of automotive engineering with experience of cutting-edge technology. Located in Coventry, at the heart of the UK automotive sector, the program benefits from the on-campus National Automotive Innovation Centre and close proximity to major manufacturers such as Jaguar Land Rover and Aston Martin.
All first-year students follow a general engineering programme, developing an in-depth understanding of classical engineering principles before specialising in Automotive Engineering from the second year onwards. This flexible structure allows you to explore multiple engineering disciplines before committing to your specialism, and you can switch between the three-year BEng and four-year MEng pathways if academic requirements are met.
By graduation, you will have gained skills ranging from mechanical design, vehicle attributes, electronic systems, manufacturing techniques, management, ergonomics and human perception of noise, vibration and performance. There are also opportunities to undertake an intercalated year in industry, research or study abroad between years two and three, which adds a year to your programme and is reflected in your degree title.
Key Program Highlights
- Accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), supporting your path to Chartered Engineer status
- Hands-on project work including autonomous vehicles, flywheel energy storage, electric-powered racing motorcycles and IMechE Formula Student racing cars
- Access to the National Automotive Innovation Centre on campus, with industry partners including Jaguar Land Rover and Tata Motors
- Flexible degree structure allowing specialisation from Year 2 and the option to switch between BEng and MEng pathways
Curriculum and Modules
The BEng Automotive Engineering curriculum begins with a broad general engineering foundation in Year 1, followed by specialisation in automotive topics from Year 2 onwards. The program blends theoretical knowledge with practical laboratory work, design projects and group assignments, with assessment typically comprising examinations, coursework and project-based work.
Dynamics and Thermodynamics
Core – Year 1Covers fundamental concepts of thermodynamics and the dynamics of mechanical systems, including kinematics, kinetics, momentum, energy conservation and the First and Second Laws of Thermodynamics applied to real-life engineering situations such as engine cycles.
Engineering Design
Core – Year 1Introduces the complexities of the design task and equips you with techniques for designing for function and manufacturing processes. You develop skills in generating innovative designs, collaborating across teams and delivering compelling design presentations.
Engineering Mathematics
Core – Year 1Develops the mathematical, probabilistic and statistical tools needed to solve real-life engineering problems. You learn to make appropriate assumptions and examine models using analytical, statistical and numerical techniques.
Vehicle Technology and Attributes
Specialist – Year 2/3Focuses on automotive-specific topics including vehicle dynamics, noise vibration and harshness (NVH), ergonomics and human perception of vehicle performance. You apply engineering principles to understand how modern vehicles are designed and evaluated.
CAD/CAM and Automotive Design
Specialist – Year 2/3Covers computer-aided design and manufacturing techniques applied to automotive engineering, including body structure design and hybrid vehicle technology. You gain practical skills in industry-standard design software and manufacturing processes.
Individual and Group Project
Core – Year 3A capstone project where you apply your accumulated knowledge to a substantial automotive engineering challenge. Topics may include gearbox analysis, autonomous vehicles, sustainable energy systems or electric vehicle development.
