Core subjects in the program include fluid mechanics, heat transfer, chemical thermodynamics, reaction engineering, mass transfer, and separations. Students also have access to an emphasis in Energy Engineering, allowing them to specialize in one of the fastest-growing sectors in the field.

More than 30% of undergraduates participate in research in professors' labs, and the department maintains a vibrant cooperative education program that includes summer internships and semester-long work experiences. Roughly 80% of graduating seniors have had co-op or research experience, and many have had both.

Key Program Highlights

  • ABET-accredited program with a curriculum balancing theory, practice, and professional skills development
  • Over 80% of graduating seniors gain co-op or hands-on research experience before graduation
  • Optional Energy Engineering emphasis for students interested in the energy sector
  • Strong departmental scholarship program with financial aid based on need, transfer status, and academic performance

Curriculum and Course Modules

The B.S. in Chemical Engineering curriculum is designed to provide a strong foundation in the physical, life, and engineering sciences. Students complete coursework in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and core chemical engineering subjects, culminating in a senior capstone design experience and the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam preparation.

Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics

3 Credits

Covers the laws of thermodynamics as applied to chemical processes, including phase equilibria, chemical equilibria, and thermodynamic property estimation for engineering applications.

Fluid Mechanics

3 Credits

Introduces the principles of fluid statics and dynamics, including momentum transport, pipe flow, pumps, and compressors relevant to chemical process design.

Heat Transfer

3 Credits

Studies conduction, convection, and radiation heat transfer mechanisms with applications in heat exchanger design and thermal process analysis.

Chemical Reaction Engineering

3 Credits

Examines the design and analysis of chemical reactors, including kinetics, catalysis, and reactor types such as batch, CSTR, and plug flow reactors.

Mass Transfer and Separations

3 Credits

Covers the fundamentals of mass transfer operations including distillation, absorption, extraction, and membrane separations used in industrial chemical processes.

Senior Capstone Design (CH EN 4706/4707)

6 Credits

A two-semester capstone experience where students apply their chemical engineering knowledge to design complete chemical processes, integrating safety, environmental, and economic considerations.
