Program Overview: M.S. in Chemical Engineering at Manhattan University

The Master of Science in Chemical Engineering at Manhattan University emphasizes practice-oriented knowledge, detailed engineering analysis, and design to prepare students for leadership roles in chemical engineering practice. Located in the Riverdale section of the Bronx, New York, the program offers both fully online and in-person options, providing flexibility for working professionals and full-time students alike.

Students can choose from three concentration areas: Consumer Products and Cosmetic Engineering, Biopharmaceutical Engineering, or Principles and Processing of Novel Materials. The cosmetic engineering concentration is notably the only one of its kind in the nation, preparing graduates for specialized roles in product formulation, process engineering, and research and development.

With small class sizes of 12 to 15 students, evening and late-afternoon scheduling, and the option to conduct research alongside coursework, the program is designed to accommodate diverse student needs. About 50% of graduates participate in research projects, with several publishing in peer-reviewed journals and presenting at industry conferences.

Key Program Highlights

  • Available fully online or entirely in person, with evening and summer classes for working professionals
  • Three specialized concentrations including the nation's only graduate Cosmetic Engineering option
  • Small class sizes of 12–15 students ensuring personalized faculty mentorship
  • 90% of program graduates are hired within three months of graduation

Curriculum and Modules

The M.S. in Chemical Engineering requires a minimum of 30 credit hours, comprising three core courses (9 credits) and seven elective courses (21 credits). Students may replace up to two electives with a research project or thesis. The curriculum blends traditional graduate coursework with electives taught by industry leaders from the New York Tri-State Area.

Advanced Engineering Mathematics (CHMG 501)

3 Credits

Covers mathematical methods essential to chemical engineering modeling and analysis, including analytical and numerical solutions of differential equations, Fourier transforms, and optimization methods.

Process Thermodynamics (CHMG 707)

3 Credits

Focuses on the application of thermodynamics to process design, including development and use of thermodynamic principles in single-phase and multi-phase processes and applications in reactor design.

Advanced Transport Phenomena (CHMG 710)

3 Credits

Explores continuum and molecular theories, boundary layer analysis, simultaneous momentum, energy and mass transport, and diffusion with chemical reaction.

Chemical Reactor Design (CHMG 713)

3 Credits

Application of engineering analysis, computer design, and optimization of chemical reactor systems for industrial and research applications.

Advanced Heat Transfer Applications (CHMG 708)

3 Credits

Covers heat transfer mechanisms and models for unsteady state and transient conduction, convection, and radiation, with applications in alternative energy, green materials, food technology, and bio-processing.

Independent Project or Thesis (CHMG 735)

3–6 Credits

Chemical engineering project or thesis on selected topics involving experimental research, process design, computer simulation, and authoring technical papers under faculty supervision.

Elective Concentration Areas

Consumer Products and Cosmetic Engineering (Formulations, Complex Fluids, Regulatory Issues) Biopharmaceutical Engineering Principles and Processing of Novel Materials Air Pollution Control Design (CHMG 727)
