Physics
Trieste Campus, Italy
Faculty members are present in many of these laboratories, often with coordination or collaboration responsibilities, as well as in several large international laboratories, and conduct experimental, theoretical, and computational research in a variety of physics fields. Students thus experience a stimulating environment from which to gain specialized knowledge useful for their future careers, whether in scientific research or in the most technologically advanced sectors of the non-academic workforce.
The Master's Degree program lasts two years and is divided into six curricula:
• Condensed Matter Physics;
• Nuclear and Subnuclear Physics;
• Theoretical Physics;
• Physics of Complex Systems, Climate, and Finance;
• Astrophysics and Cosmology;
• Quantum Science and Technology.
The master's degree, awarded after a thesis consisting of an original study on a research topic, not only provides access to employment in technologically advanced sectors, but also guarantees excellent preparation for a PhD program both in Italy and abroad.
During the second year, each student is required to complete an internship, which can take place at one of the numerous laboratories, research institutions, public and private organizations, or industries with which the degree program has agreements. The internship is aimed at learning training techniques for the thesis and is typically carried out under the guidance of the thesis supervisor or another supervisor agreed upon with the program board.
Admission to the Master's Degree in Physics requires:
• meeting the curricular requirements;
• passing the preparation test
; • possessing the necessary language skills (English at level B2).
The assessment of preparation is considered completed with a degree grade of 90/110 or higher; otherwise, it is entrusted to a commission as set forth in the degree program regulations.
The "Luciano Fonda" University College, established since 2000, offers deserving students the opportunity to study at the University of Trieste, providing accommodation and scholarships ( http://www.collegiofonda.it).
The degree program collaborates and maintains synergies with research institutions operating in various fields of physics, including: the National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN), the Istituto Officina dei Materiali and the National Institute of Optics of the National Research Council (CNR-IOM and CNR-INO), the National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF), Elettra-Sincrotrone Trieste, the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), the National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics (OGS), the Regional Agency for Environmental Protection and the Regional Meteorological Observatory of Friuli Venezia Giulia (ARPA and OSMER FVG).
