Courses are divided into four main areas: Biomedical and Human Morphology, Etiopathogenesis of Diseases and Principles of General Medicine, Dental Hygiene Sciences, and Human, Forensic, and Management Sciences. The training program includes knowledge of normal anatomy, physiology, and general and specialized pathology of the stomatognathic system, general and oral microbiology, periodontology, conservative dentistry, odontostomatological pathology, oral surgery and implantology, professional and home oral hygiene sciences and techniques, as well as courses in community dentistry, professional ergonomics, psychology, personal care, ethics, professional ethics, and interpersonal skills. This provides graduates with high-quality knowledge in healthcare and therapeutic settings, in line with relevant national and international guidelines, essential tools for the job market. Theoretical training is complemented by clinical internships conducted in local university and hospital settings, directly interacting with patients. These courses allow students to apply the knowledge acquired and acquire advanced professional skills under the guidance of tutors with specific professional profiles, under the supervision of a Head of Professional Training Activities, who operates in accordance with ministerial regulations and the general guidelines of the Degree Program Council and is the guarantor for the relevant cultural associations.
The course qualifies students for the healthcare profession of Dental Hygienist, a healthcare professional who, upon the recommendation of dentists and licensed dentists, carries out tasks related to the prevention of oral and dental diseases. Students may work in public or private healthcare facilities, either as employees or as independent contractors.
Graduates conduct dental health education and participate in primary prevention projects within the public health system. They collaborate in compiling the dental medical record and are responsible for collecting technical and statistical data. They perform tartar removal and root planing, as well as the topical application of various prophylactic treatments. They provide instruction in various oral hygiene methods and the use of appropriate diagnostic tools to detect bacterial plaque and dental patina, explaining the need for periodic clinical checkups. They also provide guidance on rational nutrition for the purpose of maintaining dental health. The Degree Course maintains ongoing contact with the relevant Order during periodic meetings of the Steering Committee, in order to maintain up-to-date information on the current status of the profession.
