The MSc Social Work at the University of the West of Scotland (UWS) is a professionally accredited, two-year full-time conversion master's degree that enables you to qualify as a social worker. Building on over 40 years of social work education at UWS, the programme combines taught modules with extensive practice placements to develop the practical skills and knowledge you need to make a real difference in people's lives.

Accredited by the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC), this programme offers a challenging and stimulating range of learning opportunities that will equip you with the key attributes necessary to work effectively in an increasingly globalised and pluralistic working environment. Upon successful completion of the Postgraduate Diploma component, you are eligible to apply for registration with the SSSC or other social work regulators throughout the United Kingdom.

Under the supervision of qualified practice teachers, you will undertake 85 days of practice placement in year one and 115 days in year two, gaining hands-on experience in real social work settings. Curriculum and Modules

The MSc Social Work is structured across two academic years, combining core taught modules at the Postgraduate Diploma stage with extensive supervised practice placements and a final research dissertation. Foundations of Social Work Practice

This core module introduces the fundamental principles, values, and methods of social work practice. You will develop a critical understanding of the social work role and build essential communication, assessment, and intervention skills.

Learning Key Lessons from Serious Case Reviews

This module examines significant case reviews and inquiries to identify critical learning for social work practice. You will analyse systemic failures and develop strategies for safeguarding and risk management.

Applied Law for Social Work

This module provides a comprehensive understanding of the legal frameworks underpinning social work practice in Scotland and the wider UK. You will study legislation relevant to child protection, community care, and mental health.

Practice Placement I

40 credits

Your first supervised practice placement of 85 days provides hands-on experience in a social work setting under the guidance of a qualified practice teacher. You will apply theoretical learning to real-world situations and develop core professional competencies.

Practice Placement II

The second supervised practice placement of 115 days builds on your earlier experience, allowing you to work with greater autonomy and complexity. You will demonstrate advanced practice skills and readiness for professional registration.

Admission Requirements

The MSc Social Work welcomes applicants from a range of academic backgrounds who can demonstrate an understanding of the social work role and the potential to become effective practitioners. All applicants will be interviewed as part of the selection process, and offers are made after all elements of the application have been considered.

Academic Requirements

  • Academic QualificationAn undergraduate honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline. International qualifications providing equivalent credits within the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework are accepted.
  • Relevant ExperienceVoluntary or paid experience in a social work or care setting is highly advantageous and strengthens your application.
  • PVG Scheme MembershipYou must be a member of the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme run by Disclosure Scotland. The university covers the cost of the enhanced disclosure.
  • SSSC RegistrationYou must register with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) as a social work student prior to enrolment. This is a legal and regulatory requirement.
  • InterviewAll applicants will be interviewed before being offered a place. Offers are conditional on satisfactory completion of all application elements.

English Language Requirements
