Program Overview: Computer and Internet Engineering BEng (Hons)
The Computer and Internet Engineering BEng (Hons) at the University of Surrey focuses on the development and implementation of computer systems and networks, with a particular emphasis on internet technologies. This program provides a broad education in electronic, electrical and computer engineering in the early stages, with opportunities to specialise in later years in areas such as mobile communications, digital signal processing and artificial intelligence.
Throughout your studies, you will complete integrated training in communications (both hardware and software), media and content delivery, and security and machine learning. The program is designed with input from industry and is supported by leading research centres including the Institute for Communication Systems, which specialises in next-generation mobile communications, and the Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing.
The BEng (Hons) is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) on behalf of the Engineering Council, fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as an Incorporated Engineer and partially meeting the requirement for Chartered Engineer status. An optional Professional Training Year allows you to gain valuable industry experience at companies such as Cisco, IBM, Nintendo, Sky and Sony.
Key Program Highlights
- IET-accredited program meeting academic requirements for Incorporated Engineer registration with the Engineering Council
- Award-winning Professional Training placements with leading technology companies including Cisco, IBM, Nintendo and Sony
- Supported by the Institute for Communication Systems specialising in next-generation mobile communications including 6G
- Strong emphasis on hands-on laboratory work, group projects and individual final-year research projects
Curriculum and Modules
The program is studied full-time over three academic years, consisting of 360 credits (120 credits at each FHEQ level 4, 5 and 6). All modules are semester-based and typically worth 15 credits, with the exception of project and dissertation modules. After a foundational year covering programming and electronics, you progress to advanced topics in communications, signal processing and computer systems.
Microprocessors and Algorithms
15 creditsCovers key concepts in microprocessor organisation and design, including instruction sets, performance analysis, arithmetic logic units, and memory hierarchies. Also introduces the analysis, design and implementation of computer algorithms using C programming.
Digital Communications
15 creditsExplores three important processing stages of modern digital communication systems: source coding for signal compression, channel error control coding for robust transmission, and modulation for efficient digital interface with available channels.
Circuits, Control and Communications
15 creditsProvides foundational knowledge in circuit analysis, control systems theory and communications principles. Builds essential skills in signals and systems that underpin advanced modules in later years.
Engineering Mathematics
15 creditsCovers essential mathematical methods for engineers including Fourier series, Fourier transforms, Laplace transforms and convolution. Provides the analytical foundation required for signal processing and communications modules.
Professional Studies and Group Project
15 creditsDevelops teamworking, project management, presentation and digital skills through group projects. Students work as a team to develop an engineering idea into a viable business case, producing written reports and delivering pitches.
Individual Final Year Project
30 creditsAn individual research or design project chosen by the student in Year 3, allowing them to specialise in an area of interest. Serves as preparation for professional career development or as a precursor to academic research.
