Computer Systems Engineering (Hons) at Queen Mary University of London

The BEng Computer Systems Engineering programme at Queen Mary University of London offers a unique 50/50 blend of computer science and electronic engineering, preparing you for a wider range of career opportunities than either discipline alone. You will learn to design innovative systems that collect and process information, studying key concepts such as programming, software engineering, microprocessor design, circuits, and distributed computer systems.

Delivered by the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science, this programme provides extensive hands-on experience in the Electronics Lab and Informatics Teaching Lab, where you work with digital circuit design, embedded systems, and software development tools. You will complete two practical projects during your degree, including a team-based engineering project in your second year and an individual final-year project.

The programme is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) on behalf of the Engineering Council, fully meeting the academic requirements for registration as an Incorporated Engineer and partly meeting those for Chartered Engineer status. You can also enhance your degree with an optional Industrial Experience Year or a Year Abroad.

Key Program Highlights

  • 50/50 split between computer science and electronic engineering for maximum career flexibility
  • IET-accredited programme meeting academic requirements for Incorporated Engineer registration
  • Hands-on projects in dedicated Electronics Lab and Informatics Teaching Lab facilities
  • Optional Industrial Experience Year or Year Abroad to gain real-world professional experience

Curriculum and Modules

The Computer Systems Engineering curriculum covers the foundations of both computer software and hardware, with modules spanning programming, circuit design, operating systems, and signals. You will spend 15 to 20 hours per week in lectures, laboratory sessions, and tutorials, with opportunities to specialise in software or hardware in your final year.
