Program Overview: Astronautics and Space Engineering MSc

The Astronautics and Space Engineering MSc at the University of Surrey provides students with the specialised knowledge and skills needed to design, build, and operate space systems for a wide range of applications, from satellite communications and Earth observation to exploration missions and space tourism. This multidisciplinary program is taught within the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences and is closely connected with the renowned Surrey Space Centre.

Surrey is the only UK academic institution that develops, builds, and operates complete space missions, from initial concept to hardware design, manufacturing and testing to in-orbit operations. Students benefit from first-hand experience of real space missions through the university's own spacecraft mission operation ground station at Surrey Space Centre.

The program covers specialist areas including space physics, mechanics, orbits, and space-propulsion systems, as well as the system and electronic design of spacecraft. Many student projects are conducted in collaboration with industry and focus on real applications, bridging the gap between university education and the end product.

Key Program Highlights

  • Accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) on behalf of the Engineering Council, supporting your path toward Chartered Engineer status
  • Access to Surrey Space Centre, the only UK academic facility that designs, builds, and operates complete satellite missions
  • Strategic partnerships with Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd and Airbus, placing you at the heart of the UK space sector
  • Flexible study options with both full-time (1 year) and part-time (2-5 years) pathways available

Curriculum and Modules

The MSc curriculum is structured around eight taught modules across two semesters, followed by a substantial individual research project completed during the summer period. You will study four modules per semester, gaining both theoretical depth and practical skills in spacecraft systems design, orbital mechanics, and space mission engineering.

Space Engineering

15 credits

A foundational module introducing key principles and techniques of spacecraft systems design through real-world examples. No prior knowledge of space is expected, but a solid understanding of basic physics and mathematics is assumed.

Space Dynamics and Missions

15 credits

Covers orbital mechanics, mission planning, and the dynamics of space vehicles. Students learn to analyse and design trajectories for various space mission profiles.

Spacecraft Electronic Systems Design

15 credits

Explores the electronic subsystems that form the core of modern spacecraft, including power systems, communications, and onboard data handling architectures.

Space Propulsion Systems

15 credits

Examines the principles and technologies behind chemical and electric propulsion systems used in satellite manoeuvring, orbit transfer, and deep-space exploration missions.

Satellite Communications and Remote Sensing

15 credits

Covers the fundamentals of satellite communication links and Earth observation technologies, including payload design and signal processing for remote sensing applications.

MSc Research Project

60 credits

A major individual research project conducted over the summer period, often in collaboration with industry partners. Students demonstrate their ability to apply knowledge to a real-world space engineering challenge and produce a comprehensive dissertation.

Elective Modules

Space Robotics and Autonomous Systems RF and Microwave Engineering Advanced Signal Processing Space Environment and Debris
