The BA Film Studies at the University of Southampton invites you to study film from a variety of perspectives, including as popular art, big business, and as a cultural and historical record. You will immerse yourself in the subject from the earliest projected images to present-day cinema, developing a critical eye for Hollywood blockbusters, European cinema, and world film traditions.
The program covers familiar classics alongside contemporary cinema, exploring genres such as film noir, horror, science fiction, documentary, and animation. You will examine the theories and philosophies that have shaped the development of film studies while building strong analytical and critical thinking skills within a supportive academic community.
Based at the Avenue Campus, this program offers access to cutting-edge Digital Humanities facilities including virtual reality, 3D scanners and printers, and a 360-degree fully immersive audio-visual centre. You can also choose to spend a semester or summer abroad at partner universities in countries such as South Korea, Sweden, Ireland, Hong Kong, and the Czech Republic.

Curriculum and Modules
The BA Film Studies program features a customisable course structure with a mix of compulsory and optional modules each year.
