MSc Aerodynamics and Computation at the University of Southampton

The MSc Aerodynamics and Computation at the University of Southampton focuses on numerical methods and the physics and computational modelling of turbulence. It enhances your knowledge of flow physics and your ability to use state-of-the-art computational tools to improve industrial designs.

This programme is ideally suited for engineering, mathematics, and science graduates with a strong background in fluid dynamics or aerodynamics. You will take part in individual and group practical work as well as a critical research project, developing your expertise in aerodynamics while examining current trends and challenges in the field.

The programme prepares you for a career in industrial research and development or for ongoing postgraduate research. You will develop your ability to use experimental and advanced computational methods, including particle image velocimetry, finite volume methods, and high-order finite difference methods.

Key Program Highlights

  • Accredited by the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) for Chartered Engineer registration
  • Access to the RJ Mitchell Wind Tunnel, the largest university wind tunnel in the UK, and high-performance computing facilities
  • Part of a Russell Group university ranked 87th globally in the QS World University Rankings 2026
  • Strong graduate employment outcomes with alumni working at leading organisations such as Dyson and Rolls-Royce

Curriculum and Modules

The MSc programme lasts 12 months, with the first 8 months dedicated to taught modules across two semesters and the final 4 months spent full-time on a substantial research project leading to a dissertation. Students complete compulsory core modules alongside a selection of elective options, totalling 90 ECTS.

Computational Aerodynamics

7.5 ECTS

Covers the physical modelling and numerical methods required for calculations of aerodynamic forces and moments on moving objects. Focuses on mathematical foundations rather than purely package-based CFD approaches.

Aerothermodynamics

7.5 ECTS

Explores the principles of aerothermodynamics, combining aerodynamic theory with thermodynamic analysis to understand heat transfer and energy exchange in high-speed flows.

Applications of CFD

7.5 ECTS

Introduces the basic concepts of Computational Fluid Dynamics and numerical procedures including FVM and FDM. The major focus is on practical applications such as geometry and grid generation, solvers, and turbulence models in CFD packages.

Turbulence

7.5 ECTS

Provides an introduction to the fundamentals of turbulent flow, focusing on understanding the equations of motion and the underlying physics they contain. Equips you with the tools necessary to continue the study of turbulence at an advanced level.

MSc Research Project

30 ECTS

A substantial independent research project where you undertake original and critical research on a relevant topic. You will communicate research objectives, methodology, analysis, results, and conclusions effectively through a written dissertation.

Experimental Methods for Aerodynamics

7.5 ECTS

Aimed at students performing aerodynamic or fluid mechanic experiments. Covers problems associated with design, setup, and execution of aerodynamic experiments in wind tunnel and laboratory environments.

Elective Modules

Aeroacoustics Data-Driven Methods for Flow Analysis and Control Hypersonic and High Temperature Gas Dynamics Introduction to Machine Learning
