The MA Urban Design and Planning at the University of Sheffield is an innovative one-year programme jointly delivered by the Department of Urban Studies and Planning and the School of Architecture. It equips you with applied and technical urban design skills to produce critical urban analysis, creative design development, and comprehensive design proposals for real sites at multiple scales, from site level to masterplans.
This programme explores the critical role of urban design and planning in solving global challenges, with opportunities to engage in design and development issues faced across both the Global South and Global North. Fully accredited by the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI), the MA prepares you for a dynamic career as a chartered planner specialising in urban design in the UK and beyond. No prior background in design or planning is required, as the programme welcomes students from diverse disciplines including geography, architecture, engineering, economics, and graphic design.

Curriculum and Modules
The MA Urban Design and Planning curriculum combines core modules in urban design theory and planning practice with studio-based workshops and a choice of specialist electives. The programme is structured across two semesters of taught modules followed by a supervised thesis design project or research dissertation during the summer period.
Urban Design: Principles and Theory
15 creditsAn introduction to the essential design components, principles, and theories that inform contemporary urban design practice. Covers key theoretical, analytical, applied, and technical aspects of urban design including legibility, diversity, safety, and sustainable design.
Urban Design Studio
30 creditsPractical studio workshops involving the analysis of large-scale urban areas, testing potential design options, designing to a brief, and communicating final masterplan visions. Students develop skills in producing professional graphics, maps, and visualisations.
Planning Theory and Practice
15 creditsExamines the factors that shape cities and rural areas, exploring policy-making and evaluation, theories and practices of planning in the UK, Europe, and internationally, as well as current developments in the planning profession.
Urban Analysis and Spatial Planning
15 creditsDevelops skills in critical urban analysis at multiple scales, including site-level assessment and city-wide spatial strategies. Explores the relationship between design, planning policy, and development processes in contemporary cities.
Development Viability and Financial Appraisal
15 creditsExplores development viability and the financial appraisal of design projects, providing understanding of real estate development processes and their relationship to urban design and planning outcomes.
Thesis Design Project or Research Dissertation
60 creditsA fully supervised capstone project allowing you to combine your knowledge and skills in design, planning, and property development. You may choose either a design-based thesis project or a traditional research dissertation on a topic of your choice.
