Structural Engineering and Architecture
Program Overview: MEng Structural Engineering and Architecture
The MEng in Structural Engineering and Architecture at the University of Sheffield is a unique four-year integrated masters program that develops you as both a technical engineer and a creative architect. Taught jointly between the Department of Civil and Structural Engineering and the School of Architecture, you will collaborate with students from both departments, preparing you for the multi-disciplinary professional relationships that define the modern construction industry.
Throughout the program, you will explore fundamentals including mathematics, mechanics, geotechnics, humanities, and the history of architecture, while simultaneously developing creative design skills through projects in sustainable structural engineering and architecture. In the final two years, specialist modules deepen your technical ability and teach you how to integrate architectural vision with engineering rigour, culminating in a research project in your final year.
This dual-accredited course has been running since 1995, making it the first and longest-running program of its kind in the United Kingdom. Graduates emerge with a unique understanding of both disciplines, making them exceptionally employable as architects, structural engineers, or professionals who bridge both fields.
Key Program Highlights
- Dual accreditation by RIBA/ARB (Part 1 Architecture) and JBM (Chartered Engineer pathway), allowing graduates to pursue careers as architects, structural engineers, or both.
- The longest-running dual-accredited structural engineering and architecture course in the UK, established in 1995 with extensive experience in delivering integrated education.
- Unique access to facilities in The Diamond, an GBP 82 million engineering learning hub, and the architecture design studios in the iconic Arts Tower.
- Strong focus on sustainability and climate-responsive design, equipping graduates with the skills to holistically design sustainable buildings in response to the climate emergency.
Curriculum and Modules
The MEng Structural Engineering and Architecture curriculum integrates architectural and engineering subjects across all four years, progressing from foundational principles to advanced specialist modules. Each year includes a carefully balanced mix of design studio work, engineering science, humanities, and project-based learning.
Civil Engineering Mechanics and Structural Analysis
20 creditsCovers the fundamental principles of mechanics, structural analysis methods, and load path design essential for understanding how buildings and structures behave under various conditions.
Architectural Design Studio
30 creditsA studio-based module developing creative architectural design skills through iterative projects, model-making, and digital design, integrating aesthetic vision with structural feasibility.
Civil Engineering Materials and Geotechnics
20 creditsExplores the properties and behaviour of construction materials including concrete, steel, and timber, alongside geotechnical engineering principles for foundation and ground engineering design.
Humanities and History of Architecture
20 creditsProvides critical understanding of architectural history, theory, and cultural context, enabling students to situate their design work within broader social, environmental, and historical frameworks.
Multi-Storey Building Design
10 creditsAn advanced module focusing on the structural design of multi-storey buildings, covering lateral stability systems, floor systems, and the integration of structural and architectural requirements.
Bridge Engineering and Advanced Structures
10 creditsExamines the design principles and construction methods for bridges and other large-scale structures, incorporating analysis of load combinations, material selection, and aesthetic considerations.
