Program Overview: MEng Structural and Fire Safety Engineering

The MEng Structural and Fire Safety Engineering at the University of Edinburgh provides a valuable grounding in civil and environmental engineering, equipping you with the skills to mitigate fire risk through the design, construction, and protection of infrastructure. You will learn to determine the effects of modern construction methods and materials on the safety of buildings and infrastructure, addressing one of the most critical challenges in the built environment.

This program draws on areas of particular expertise at Edinburgh in traditional areas such as transport, tunnels, bridges, and buildings, while also addressing emerging fields including structural fire engineering, advanced geotechnical investigation, use of novel and sustainable materials, and advanced numerical modelling. You will take specific structural and fire safety engineering courses from Year 3 onwards, culminating in a substantial fire safety engineering design project and an honours thesis on a challenging engineering problem.

The program benefits from strong industrial engagement through an Industrial Advisory Board and direct industry input to teaching and design projects. Edinburgh is home to the Edinburgh Fire Research Centre, and graduates of this program have contributed to fire engineering on landmark projects globally, making it a truly unique and impactful degree.

Key Program Highlights

  • Fully meets the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng), accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) on behalf of the Engineering Council
  • Access to specialist laboratories, a student makerspace, and cutting-edge industry-standard equipment at the King's Buildings campus
  • Strong industrial engagement with opportunities for interaction with recent graduates working in the fire safety and structural engineering industries
  • Opportunities for international study exchanges in Year 3 and potential for overseas MEng projects

Curriculum and Modules

The MEng Structural and Fire Safety Engineering curriculum builds progressively from foundational civil engineering principles in the early years to specialist fire safety and structural engineering topics in Years 3 through 5. You will develop both theoretical knowledge and practical design skills through lectures, assignments, individual and group projects, and a substantial research thesis.

Engineering Principles and Design

An interdisciplinary introduction to engineering challenges, developing essential engineering skills and understanding the breadth of the discipline. Includes team-based engineering design tasks using engineering judgement to evaluate solutions.

Structural Mechanics and Analysis

Covers fundamental concepts of structural behaviour, load analysis, and the mechanics of materials. Prepares you for advanced specialisation in structural engineering at honours level.

Fire Science and Engineering

Introduces the science of fire phenomena, fire dynamics, and the behaviour of people, structures, and fire safety systems in response to fire events. Provides the essential knowledge base for fire safety engineering practice.

Structural Fire Engineering

Advanced study of how structures perform during fire events, including the response of different materials and construction methods to elevated temperatures. Covers performance-based fire design approaches for buildings and infrastructure.

Fire Safety Engineering Design Project

A substantial design project supported by experienced industrialists, applying fire safety engineering principles to real-world scenarios. Develops professional skills in fire strategy development and engineering calculations for complex buildings.

Honours Thesis

An original study of a challenging engineering problem related to fire and/or structures, comprising a significant portion of final year credits. Conducted under individual supervision, advancing the frontiers of engineering knowledge.

Elective Courses

Advanced Geotechnical Investigation and Design Advanced Numerical Modelling for Structures Novel and Sustainable Materials in Construction Engineering Mathematics and Programming
