Mathematics MMath

This four-year MMath Mathematics course provides the skills, knowledge, and research experience needed to solve complex problems in a logical and analytical way.

In the first year, the focus is on fundamental mathematical concepts. Essential topics such as calculus, algebra, modelling, and data science are covered. Problem-solving abilities are refined, programming skills are developed using Python and R, and work is presented using LaTeX.

In the second year, the skill set is developed further. In addition to core modules, there is a chance to explore important areas of mathematics through optional modules covering topics such as algebraic structures, special relativity, and stochastic modelling.

The third year of the degree is shaped through either a pure mathematics, applied mathematics, or probability and statistics pathway. This pathway can be complemented or replaced with a mathematics and statistics project and skills module. There is also the opportunity to choose from a range of optional modules, such as machine learning or number theory and cryptography.

In the fourth year, the degree is tailored to interests and aspirations through more in-depth optional modules. Choosing from topics such as medical statistics, financial mathematics, and algebraic topology provides the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in a variety of careers.

Valuable independent research experience is gained by spending a large part of the final year investigating a chosen real-world or pure maths problem, working alongside an active researcher who is an expert in that area. Project planning, problem-solving, and software skills are developed. Proficiency is also gained in presenting mathematical, statistical, and technical information, with experience in communicating findings both verbally and in writing.
