Program Overview: Materials Science and Engineering MEng
The Materials Science and Engineering MEng at the University of Sheffield offers a unique balance of research and practical industrial experience, preparing you for diverse careers in both research and industry. This interdisciplinary program combines elements of physics, chemistry, engineering, and mathematics to tackle real-world challenges, with sustainability integrated as a core theme throughout the course.
From your first year, you will build a strong theoretical foundation while gaining hands-on practical skills essential for materials engineers. Group projects challenge you to solve real engineering problems while developing key transferable skills such as project management, communication, and technical problem-solving that are highly valued by employers across multiple sectors.
In your third year, you will participate in industrial training programmes defined by industry partners, gaining direct insight into how businesses approach engineering problem solving. Your final year culminates in an independent research project embedded in one of the university's leading research groups, where you will showcase your technical proficiency and contribute innovative ideas to the field.
Key Program Highlights
- Fully accredited by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3), supporting your path to Chartered Engineer (CEng) status
- Guaranteed 5-month industrial placement in your third year, with previous partners including Tata Steel and National Nuclear Laboratory
- Access to The Diamond, an GBP 82 million state-of-the-art engineering facility designed for hands-on, learning-by-doing education
- Option to add a year in industry or a year abroad at one of over 250 partner universities worldwide
Curriculum and Modules
The MEng curriculum is structured to progressively build your knowledge from foundational materials science principles through to advanced research-level topics. Your first two years establish a solid grounding in theory and practical skills, while later years allow you to specialise through optional modules and engage directly with industry and cutting-edge research.
Materials Selection and Lifecycle
20 creditsIntroduces all key material classes including ceramics, metals, polymers and composites, covering their properties, processing, and applications. Includes materials selection using Ashby diagrams and lifecycle analysis to understand environmental impact.
Functional Materials Properties
20 creditsExplores the link between what is done to a material and how it responds, covering magnetic, electrical, and optical materials. Topics include classification of magnetic materials, conductors and semiconductors, and optical absorption and emission.
Mechanical Properties and Thermodynamics
20 creditsIntroduces basic concepts of mechanical properties and how they arise at the atomic and micro scales. Covers elastic moduli, microstructure-property relationships, and thermodynamic concepts including enthalpy, entropy, and free energy.
Chemistry and Biology for Materials Scientists
20 creditsIntroduces key concepts of chemistry and biology relevant to materials science and engineering. Covers bonding, chemical and biological interactions, molecular shapes, and crystal structures observed in materials.
Mathematics for Materials Engineers
20 creditsDevelops core mathematical skills essential for materials engineers. Students learn to use mathematics to solve engineering and scientific problems and explore how mathematical tools aid understanding of materials science concepts.
