Advanced Metallurgy MMet Program Overview
The Advanced Metallurgy MMet at the University of Sheffield provides an in-depth understanding of current developments in metallurgy and metallurgical engineering. First established in the early 1950s, the program has produced over 1,000 graduates, with many now working in senior positions within metallurgical companies across the globe.
You will learn the fundamentals of thermodynamics, structure, and mechanical behaviour, as well as more advanced courses on engineering alloys, processing, modelling, and performance in service. The program combines eight taught modules with an extended research project, allowing you to tailor your studies to your career goals.
Sheffield is one of the UK's most established hubs for materials research and teaching, with a research heritage dating back over 135 years. Students benefit from access to state-of-the-art laboratories and facilities, including advanced microscopy, mechanical testing suites, and high-performance computing.
Key Program Highlights
- Fully accredited by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IoM3), providing a pathway to professional registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng)
- Over 70 years of heritage with more than 1,000 graduates now holding senior positions in metallurgical companies worldwide
- Combines 120 credits of taught modules with a 60-credit extended research project in a cutting-edge metallurgy topic
- Access to world-leading facilities including The Diamond building, advanced microscopy labs, and mechanical testing suites
Curriculum and Modules
The MMet program consists of eight taught modules contributing 120 credits, complemented by a 60-credit extended research project conducted principally during the summer semester. The curriculum covers both fundamental metallurgical principles and advanced topics in engineering alloy design, processing, and performance.
Engineering Alloys
15 CreditsCovers engineering metallic alloys including alloy steels, stainless steels, light alloys such as aluminium and titanium, and high-temperature metallic systems including intermetallics and nickel superalloys. Focuses on the physical metallurgy of these alloys and their processing, microstructure, and performance in automotive and aerospace sectors.
Heat and Materials with Application
15 CreditsExamines the transfer of heat to and from materials and thermally activated processes occurring during manufacture. Covers conduction, convection, and radiative heat transfer, as well as diffusion processes governed by Fick's laws.
Introduction to Materials
15 CreditsIntroduces key concepts in materials science covering general aspects and applications of metallic, polymeric, and inorganic materials. Topics include chemical bonding, basic crystallography, crystal defects, mechanical properties, phase diagrams, and transformations.
Mechanical Behaviour of Materials
15 CreditsExplores the mechanical properties and deformation behaviour of metallic materials, including elasticity, plasticity, fracture mechanics, fatigue, and creep. Provides the theoretical foundation for understanding material performance in service.
Processing and Manufacturing of Metals
15 CreditsCovers modern manufacturing and processing techniques for metallic materials, including casting, forming, welding, and powder metallurgy. Examines how processing parameters affect microstructure and final properties.
Extended Research Project
60 CreditsAn individual research project in a selected area of metallurgy conducted principally during the summer period. Students work closely with academic staff on a current and topical research problem, developing advanced analytical, reporting, and presentation skills.
