Program Overview: M.Sc. Electrical Engineering at University of Rostock

The Master of Science in Electrical Engineering at the University of Rostock is a research-oriented program that provides students with the expertise and methods needed for an independent professional career in specialized fields of electrical engineering. Built on a foundation of 120 ECTS credits completed over four semesters, the program is taught entirely in English and welcomes international students from around the world.

Students can expand their knowledge in one of two major specializations: Power Engineering, which covers the generation, transmission, conversion, and application of electrical energy including renewable sources, and Information Technology, which focuses on digital signal processing, data transmission, circuit design, embedded systems, and wireless communication. The curriculum is flexible, allowing you to choose and combine modules according to your interests across the first two semesters before selecting a specialization module in the third semester.

Founded in 1419, the University of Rostock is the oldest university in the Baltic Sea region and one of the most historically significant in Germany. The Faculty of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering offers an excellent student-to-professor ratio, proximity to research facilities, and a supportive international community in the charming Hanseatic city of Rostock on the Baltic coast.

Key Program Highlights

  • Two internationally recognized specializations: Power Engineering and Information Technology, both with growing global demand for graduates.
  • Fully English-taught program with the option to take individual elective modules in German for additional language development.
  • Flexible curriculum allowing students to freely choose and combine modules from advanced subjects according to personal interests.
  • Strong research orientation with a dedicated fourth semester for the Master's thesis (30 ECTS), preparing graduates for both industry and doctoral studies.

Curriculum and Modules

The M.Sc. Electrical Engineering curriculum is structured across four semesters, with the first two dedicated to advanced coursework, the third to specialization modules, and the fourth to the Master's thesis. Students select modules totaling 42 credits from their chosen specialization catalog and 6 credits from the alternative specialization, ensuring both depth and breadth of knowledge.

Digital Signal Processing

6 ECTS

A core module for the Information Technology specialization covering the theory and application of digital signal processing techniques used in modern communication and data analysis systems.

Power System Control and Protection

6 ECTS

A foundational module for the Power Engineering specialization focusing on the control, monitoring, and protection of electrical power systems and grid infrastructure.

Power Electronics for Electrical Power Supply

6 ECTS

Covers the design and operation of power electronic converters and their application in electrical power supply systems, including renewable energy integration and drive systems.

Radio Navigation and Radar

6 ECTS

A core module for the Information Technology specialization addressing the principles and technologies behind radio navigation systems and radar signal processing.

Specialization Module

12 ECTS

In the third semester, students select a specialization module that allows them to deepen their expertise in their chosen field of study, either Power Engineering or Information Technology.

Master's Thesis

30 ECTS

The fourth semester is dedicated to completing and defending the Master's thesis, an independent research project demonstrating the student's ability to apply scientific methods to solve complex engineering problems.
