Electronic Engineering & Internet of Things
Program Overview: BEng Electronic Engineering and Internet of Things with Foundation Year
This four-year degree with a built-in foundation year equips you with fundamental knowledge in electronics, mathematical techniques, computing, and vital study skills. It is ideal if you would like to study an undergraduate degree but do not have traditional qualifications or cannot meet the requirements for the standard three-year course.
Your foundation year is shared with students from other foundation year courses in the School of Computing and Digital Media, giving you a broader perspective on the electronics and computing sector. In the subsequent three years, you study the same content and have the same module choices as students on the standard Electronic Engineering and Internet of Things BEng degree.
The course is supported by specialised laboratories in general electronics, IoT, high frequency communications, computer-aided design (CAD), embedded systems, digital systems, and opto-electronics. You will graduate with the same award and title as students on the standard course, fully prepared for careers in telecommunications, healthcare, automotives, and other IoT-driven industries.
Key Program Highlights
- Built-in foundation year providing a supported pathway into undergraduate engineering study
- Hands-on learning in specialised IoT, electronics, embedded systems, and communications laboratories
- Flexibility to change your degree specialism at the end of the foundation year
- Graduate with the same BEng (Hons) award as students on the standard three-year programme
Curriculum & Modules
The programme spans four years beginning with a foundation year (Year 0) that builds core academic skills, followed by three years of progressively advanced electronic engineering and IoT modules. You will spend a considerable part of each specialised module in laboratories, practising what you learn in lectures and seminars.
Introduction to Robotics and Internet of Things
30 creditsIntroduces foundational knowledge of hardware and software elements relevant to robotics and IoT, providing practical experience in the design and development of simple IoT systems through lectures, seminars, and laboratory workshops.
Communications Engineering
30 creditsCovers essential principles of data transmission, networking, and real-time communication across industries including telecommunications, healthcare, and broadcasting, forming the foundation for mobile networks, fibre-optic, and satellite communication.
Electronics Systems
30 creditsDevelops your understanding of fundamental electronic circuit design and analysis, covering both analogue and digital systems through a combination of theoretical study and hands-on laboratory practice.
Microprocessors and Embedded Systems
30 creditsExplores the architecture, programming, and application of microprocessors and embedded systems used in IoT devices, automation, and control systems, with extensive practical laboratory work.
Mobile Communications Systems
30 creditsExamines the principles and technologies behind mobile and wireless communication networks, including cellular systems, signal processing, and modern telecommunications infrastructure.
IoT Systems and Security
15 creditsFocuses on the design, deployment, and security of Internet of Things systems, addressing key challenges in data integrity, network vulnerabilities, and secure communication protocols for connected devices.
