Program Overview — Law (Jurisprudence) at Oxford
The BA in Jurisprudence at the University of Oxford is a three-year undergraduate law degree equivalent to what other universities call an LLB. It is a qualifying law degree for the purpose of practice as a solicitor or barrister in England and Wales, recognised by the Bar Standards Board as covering the foundations of legal knowledge.
Oxford's Law degree is distinctive in its emphasis on the philosophy of law — jurisprudence — which is compulsory only at Oxford among UK law schools. Teaching is delivered through the renowned Oxford tutorial system, where students receive personalised instruction in small groups of two to four, complemented by lectures and seminars.
Students are expected to read extensively from primary sources and develop views not simply about what the law is, but also about why it is so, whether it should be so, and how it might be different. The workload is approximately 40 to 45 hours per week, fostering deep critical thinking and analytical skills.
