Curriculum and Modules
The MSc Lift Engineering is made up of seven modules: four compulsory modules, two elective option modules, and a dissertation. The compulsory modules cover the fundamental areas essential to lift engineering, including the codes and standards to which lifts and their design must adhere. Each taught module entails approximately 200 hours of independent study, and the dissertation entails around 600 hours.
Lift Applications Engineering
Core ModuleCovers the fundamental principles of lift applications, including mechanical and electrical systems integral to lift design and operation. You will study the engineering science underpinning modern vertical transportation systems.
Codes and Standards
Core ModuleProvides a thorough understanding of the national and international codes and standards governing lift design, installation, and maintenance, including EN 81 and ASME/ANSI A17.1 frameworks.
Contract Management
Core ModuleFocuses on the principles and practices of contract management within the lift industry, including procurement, service-level agreements, and legal considerations for lift maintenance and installation projects.
Research Methods
Core ModuleEquips you with the research methodology skills required to undertake your dissertation, covering quantitative and qualitative approaches, data analysis, and academic writing at postgraduate level.
Lift Design and Traffic Analysis
Option ModuleExplores advanced lift design principles and traffic analysis techniques used to optimise lift performance in commercial and residential buildings. You will learn simulation methods and passenger flow modelling.
Dissertation
Core Module (600 hours)A professional practice project consisting of design and/or investigative research on an appropriate topic in lift engineering. This is your opportunity to make an original contribution to the field.
