Middle Eastern Studies

In addition to skills in scholarly discourse and interaction, students will also acquire presentation and communication competencies. Furthermore, they will train in transferring their skills and expertise to other fields of work. The program is interdisciplinary: students attend Master modules from the range of courses of the Center for Near and Middle Eastern Studies (CNMS), in accordance with their individual skills and interests, supplemented by subject-specific linguistic training and supported by a module on theories and methodology, as well as a cross-subject, interdisciplinary colloquium. The growing importance of the MENA countries opens up a wide range of professional fields to graduates in Middle Eastern studies subjects, as the demand for expertise and focus on the societies of the Near and Middle East continues to rise. As a result of its broad, interdisciplinary alignment, the Master program "Middle Eastern Studies" does not prepare students for a narrowly restricted professional field, but rather imparts both humanistic and cultural knowledge, as well as knowledge of political, economic and regional studies. It expands and supplements the knowledge, competencies and skills acquired in the Bachelor program. This establishes the prerequisites for independent scholarly work in the field of the Middle East. In addition, as a result of specialized, practical linguistic and intercultural competencies acquired in the program, as well as the ability to meaningfully convey independently developed research results, successful graduates of the Master's program have access to a broad spectrum of possible professional fields, including outside of the university and scholarly institutions.
