Pharmacology MBiol
University of Liverpool, United Kingdom
The Master of Pharmacology (MBiol) is a four-year degree programme that combines undergraduate study with advanced research training. Students initially follow the three-year BSc in Pharmacology and, subject to academic performance, progress into a fourth year at Master’s level. This structure allows students to build a strong scientific foundation before developing more specialised research skills.
During the first three years, the programme covers a broad range of pharmacological topics. Students study areas such as drug discovery and development, the cellular and molecular basis of health and disease, translational pharmacology, and advanced pharmacology and therapeutics. The curriculum also provides opportunities to specialise in specific areas of interest and to undertake an independent research project, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge to practical scientific investigation.
The fourth year focuses on advanced research training and the development of professional skills required for careers in scientific research or related fields. Students join an active research group and carry out a substantial research project under academic supervision. This experience helps develop experimental design, data analysis, and scientific communication skills.
Students may also apply for a six-week summer research internship in the United Kingdom or abroad. In addition, some students choose to spend part of the final year gaining experience in industry or other professional environments. The programme is designed for those who aim to pursue research careers, including doctoral study, or who want to strengthen their qualifications for work in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology sectors.
