The Master of Pharmacology (MBiol) is a four-year integrated programme in which you first follow the three-year BSc in Pharmacology and then continue into a fourth Master's year, subject to academic performance. Pharmacology is an exciting branch of experimental science in which you study how chemical substances interact with our bodies and underpin the creation of medicines used to treat a wide range of diseases.
During the first three years you will study a broad range of modules including drug discovery and development, the cellular basis of health and disease, translational pharmacology, and advanced pharmacology and therapeutics, with the opportunity to specialise and carry out your own research project. The fourth year aims at developing enhanced research and personal skills for students seeking a high-level career in research or those seeking to enhance their qualification.
Students will join a research team to undertake a significant research project in the fourth year. You can also apply for a six-week summer research internship in the UK or overseas, or apply to spend time working in industry or in other enterprises, giving you valuable real-world experience before graduation.

Curriculum and Modules

In the first year you gain an understanding of core concepts of biology as well as the fundamental principles of immunity, infection, and therapy. You will also study how organisms develop and function and learn about ecology and the global environment.
This module explores how pharmacological principles underpin the creation of medicines used to treat a wide range of diseases. You will study drug targets, lead compound identification, and the drug development pipeline from bench to bedside.
Explore the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying health and disease states. This module provides essential knowledge of cell biology, signalling pathways, and pathological processes relevant to pharmacological intervention.
This module bridges the gap between laboratory research and clinical application, examining how pharmacological discoveries are translated into therapeutic strategies for patient benefit.
Gain an understanding of novel drug types and advanced drug delivery methods at the cutting edge of pharmacology. This module covers state-of-the-art therapeutic approaches and their clinical applications.
In the fourth year, you join a research team to undertake a significant independent research project alongside the compulsory Global Perspectives module. This year develops enhanced research and personal skills for students seeking careers in research or industry.
