It was formally established on 1 April 2022 through the merger of three institutes of technology: Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT), Institute of Technology Sligo (IT Sligo), and Letterkenny Institute of Technology (LYIT), making it the fourth technological university in Ireland.
