Program Overview: MS in Clinical Research

The Master of Science in Clinical Research at the University of Arizona prepares graduates to become highly qualified clinical investigators capable of conducting leading-edge clinical research. Students learn to design, conduct, and analyze the results of research projects involving human subjects, with the ultimate goal of translating findings into improved treatments and patient outcomes.

Offered through the University of Arizona College of Medicine, this program is available on both the Tucson and Phoenix campuses. It welcomes post-baccalaureate students as well as postgraduate applicants holding terminal degrees such as MD, DO, or MBBS, who may be able to transfer up to six credits toward the MS degree.

Curriculum and Course Modules

Students must complete a minimum of 30 units of graduate-level coursework, including at least six units of thesis credit. At least 15 units must be letter-graded. The curriculum combines core clinical research courses with electives tailored to each student's research interests under the guidance of their faculty mentor.

Principles of Clinical Research I (CTS 501)

Foundational course covering the principles, methodologies, and frameworks essential to designing and conducting clinical research with human subjects.

Principles of Clinical Research II (CTS 502)

3 Units

Advanced continuation of clinical research principles, focusing on complex study designs, regulatory considerations, and translational research strategies.

Informatics for Clinical Research (CTS 503)

3 Units

Training in the management, organization, and utilization of clinical research data, including database design and electronic data capture systems.

Biostatistics for Clinical Research

3 Units

Covers statistical methods and analytical techniques essential for designing clinical studies and interpreting research data in health sciences.

Responsible Conduct of Research

3 Units

Examines the ethical principles, regulatory frameworks, and professional standards governing the responsible conduct of human subjects research.

Thesis Research

Students conduct an original thesis project under the supervision of a faculty mentor, culminating in a written thesis and oral defense.
