Chinese Studies BA

Year 1 builds foundations in the Asia Pacific’s history, culture and diversity through modules like The Shaping of the Asia Pacific, East Asian Popular Culture and Background to China, alongside Beginners Chinese to develop core language skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing. Optional modules introduce humanities or social science methods and key academic skills.

Year 2 deepens regional understanding with Cultural Transformations and Cross Cultural Encounters and Taiwan in the Asia Pacific, while Aspects of Chinese Society explores contemporary life through media and texts. Language progression continues with Chinese Language and Society and Intermediate Chinese Literacy. Optional modules focus on employability, global citizenship and research skills.

Year 3 advances critical and global perspectives through International Relations of the Asia Pacific and Sustainable Development in the region. You complete a Dissertation and a Translation Project, applying language and analytical skills. Optional modules such as Chinese Language 3 and Understanding Chinese Economy and Society further strengthen advanced language, translation and cultural competence.
