Program Overview: BSc Biology at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg

The Bachelor of Science in Biology at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) combines a broad foundational scientific education with the opportunity to specialize through elective biological modules in the later semesters. This 180-credit program is designed to be completed over six semesters and provides students with both theoretical knowledge and extensive practical laboratory experience.

Halle is a leading location for biological research, with particular strengths in molecular mechanisms of biological information processing, protein biochemistry, phytopathology, heavy metal resistance of microorganisms, social behavior and genetics of bees, and the functions of biodiversity in the subtropics. Students benefit from close ties to renowned research institutions such as the Max Planck Society, the Leibniz Association, and the Fraunhofer Society, all of which collaborate actively with the university.

The program is taught entirely in German and begins each winter semester. Knowledge is delivered through lectures, seminars, exercises, and numerous integrated laboratory practicals, especially in the compulsory modules of the first four semesters. In the fifth semester, students select from a range of elective project modules to tailor their studies to their interests.

Key Program Highlights

  • 180 ECTS program combining broad biological foundations with specialized elective modules in the final semesters
  • Extensive hands-on laboratory practicals integrated into compulsory modules from the first semester onward
  • Access to cutting-edge research facilities on the Weinberg Campus and collaborations with Max Planck and Leibniz institutes
  • Strong research focus areas including molecular plant biology, protein biochemistry, ecology, and bee genetics

Curriculum and Modules

The BSc Biology curriculum at MLU is structured to provide a solid grounding in all major biological disciplines during the first four semesters, followed by specialization through elective project modules in the fifth semester. The sixth semester is dedicated to the Bachelor thesis. Supporting modules in chemistry, physics, and mathematics complement the core biological training.

General Zoology (Allgemeine Zoologie)

10 ECTS

Covers the fundamentals of animal biology including morphology, anatomy, systematics, and evolution. Includes integrated laboratory practicals with hands-on specimen analysis and dissection techniques.

General Botany (Allgemeine Botanik)

10 ECTS

Introduces plant biology fundamentals including plant anatomy, morphology, reproduction, and systematics. Practical sessions involve microscopy and the study of plant structures at cellular and tissue levels.

General Biochemistry for Biologists (Allgemeine Biochemie)

5 ECTS

Provides foundational knowledge in biochemistry including the structure and function of biomolecules, enzyme kinetics, and metabolic pathways essential for understanding biological processes.

Cell Biology (Zellbiologie)

5 ECTS

Explores the structure and function of eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells, covering topics such as cell organelles, membrane transport, cell signaling, and the cell cycle.

Ecology, Geobotany, and Biometry (Okologie, Geobotanik und Biometrie)

10 ECTS

Covers ecological principles, plant geography, and statistical methods for biological data analysis. Students learn to design experiments and apply biometric techniques to ecological research questions.

Physiology of Animals and Humans (Physiologie der Tiere und des Menschen)

5 ECTS

Examines the physiological processes in animals and humans including neurophysiology, cardiovascular function, respiration, and metabolic regulation through lectures and practical experiments.

Elective Project Modules (5th Semester)

Project Module: Current Approaches in Plant Physiology Project Module: General Zoology Project Module: Biochemistry and Biotechnology for Biologists Project Module: Developmental Biology of Animals and Humans
