Program Overview: M.Sc. Neurosciences at the University of Göttingen
The M.Sc. Neurosciences at the University of Göttingen is an intensive, research-oriented program conducted jointly by the University of Göttingen, the Max Planck Institute for Multidisciplinary Sciences, the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization, the German Primate Center, and the European Neuroscience Institute Göttingen. Recognized and funded as an International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS), the program prepares aspiring scientists for professional careers in academia and science-related professions in the public or private sector.
The first year of the program delivers 90 ECTS through an intensive schedule of lectures, tutorials, hands-on methods courses, professional skills workshops, and three individually supervised eight-week laboratory rotation projects. Students who achieve good to excellent results after the first year may qualify for direct admission to a three-year doctoral program, with the Master's thesis requirement waived via a fast-track option.
The program has been recognized as a model best practice example by independent external reviewers and was awarded the label Top 10 International Master's Degree Courses Made in Germany by the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft together with the DAAD. Founded in 1737, the University of Göttingen is linked with over 40 Nobel Prize winners and provides an outstanding research environment in the heart of Germany.
Key Program Highlights
- International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS) with access to leading Max Planck Institutes and the German Primate Center
- Fast-track PhD option allowing direct transition to a three-year doctoral program without writing a Master's thesis
- Three individually supervised eight-week lab rotations with over 120 research project options to choose from
- Awarded Top 10 International Master's Degree Courses Made in Germany by Stifterverband and DAAD
Curriculum and Modules
The M.Sc. Neurosciences curriculum is structured in two segments. The first year comprises 36 weeks of intensive coursework earning 90 ECTS, combining lectures, tutorials, methods courses, lab rotations, and professional skills training. The second segment is a six-month Master's thesis project worth 30 ECTS, based on experimental scientific research.
Lectures and Tutorials in Neurosciences
20 ECTSA comprehensive 36-week lecture series covering neurobiology, physiology, neurogenetics, neuropharmacology, neuroendocrinology, neuronal development, neuroanatomy, sensory and motor neurosciences, clinical neurosciences, higher brain functions, computational neurosciences, molecular biology, and statistics. Tutorials accompany each lecture for in-depth discussion.
Methods Courses
10 ECTSHands-on practical courses during the first nine weeks (October to December) providing training in fundamental neuroscience methods including biochemistry, molecular biology, cell staining and imaging, electrophysiology, systems physiology, light and electron microscopy, and genetics. Courses are conducted in small groups in participating research departments.
Laboratory Rotations
30 ECTSThree individually supervised eight-week research projects (January to June) in participating departments, chosen from different fields. Students select from over 120 project offers across the University of Göttingen, Max Planck Institutes, the German Primate Center, and other partner institutions.
Professional Skills Training
5 ECTSWorkshops on good scientific practice, scientific writing, oral presentation techniques, design of scientific illustrations, and handling of experimental animals. These skills are applied during lab rotations and reporting seminars throughout the academic year.
Master Seminar and Examinations
5 ECTSA reporting seminar running from March to June where students present and discuss their lab rotation research. The first year concludes in August with one written and two oral Master's examinations that qualify students for the thesis phase or direct PhD entry.
Master's Thesis
30 ECTSA six-month experimental research project conducted under the supervision of a faculty member of the Neuroscience Program. The thesis involves original scientific research and concludes with a written thesis and defense, leading to the award of the Master of Science degree.
