History of Art MA

The History of Art MA (Hons) provides a comprehensive journey through the evolution of visual culture, from classical techniques to contemporary theories. The curriculum is designed to be accessible even for beginners, starting with the fundamental materials of art before moving into complex theoretical and contextual analysis. A defining feature of the program is the direct access to the Whistler and Mackintosh collections, alongside hands-on learning at Kelvin Hall.

In the Honours years, students specialize in diverse areas of Western and non-Western art, supported by methodological core courses and a research-focused dissertation. A unique "vacation grant" in the third year assists students in visiting international galleries and buildings relevant to their studies. With options for professional work placements, graduates are exceptionally well-equipped for roles in prestigious auction houses, museums, and journalism, securing posts at institutions such as the British Film Institute and major global galleries.
