Mathematics Bachelor
University of Genoa Campuses, Italy
Course instructors offer exercises that students can complete independently to test their knowledge and strengthen their independence. Tutoring is provided for the first-year courses to support students and encourage group work. Some lessons are held in laboratories and computer rooms where students can put their theoretical knowledge into practice. Professional development modules offer initial experience of the world of work.
Career opportunities
The natural outcome of the bachelor's degree is continuation of studies with a master's degree, in most cases in the Mathematics degree class.
What you will learn
You will learn...
To develop reasoning skills
Algebra
For example, that not all infinite sets have the same cardinality
Mathematical analysis
For example, the Hahn-Banach Theorem, the Fubini-Tonelli Theorem
Numerical analysis
For example, how long does it take for a PC to solve 1000 equations in 1000 unknowns?
Mathematical physics
For example, the Euler-Lagrange equations and the Hamilton equations
Geometry
For example, how to manipulate equations to get surprising surfaces
Mathematical logic
For example, Gödel's Incompleteness Theorem
Chance
For example, the law of large numbers
You will also learn that...
Mathematics is done together, as a team game
The degree program is divided into two curricula: " General and Didactic" and "Applied ." The first two years are common to both curricula and focus on acquiring basic mathematical knowledge. The third year completes the basic preparation with some common courses and others differentiated between the two curricula. The General and Didactic course deepens knowledge of fundamental mathematics, while the Applied course deepens skills in mathematical modeling and computation. Two elective courses are also available to deepen the knowledge acquired in the first two years.
For students intending to pursue careers in secondary school teaching and science communication, the curricula allow them to acquire credits in skills oriented to these professions, for continuation of their studies in the Master's degree curriculum.
