Program Overview: BSc Astrophysics at UCL

The BSc Astrophysics at UCL is a three-year programme that teaches you to apply your knowledge of physics to astronomical observation and to the interpretation of data and images obtained from the cosmos. The programme spans a broad frontier of technologies including materials science, optics, and electronics, preparing you for a versatile scientific career.

Compulsory modules in the first two years provide a strong grounding in mathematics and classical and quantum physics, while progressively building your exposure to astronomy and astrophysics topics. You will undertake practical work at the UCL Observatory (UCLO), one of the best-equipped astronomical facilities for student training and research in the UK, and benefit from UCL's close association with the Royal Astronomical Society.

The programme is accredited by the Institute of Physics (IOP) and incorporates the latest developments and discoveries in the field, drawn from UCL's highly-rated research output. An astrophysics degree from UCL is a strong asset across the whole range of careers where scientific skills are required, extending beyond research and enabling leading roles in solving global challenges.

Key Program Highlights

  • Accredited by the Institute of Physics (IOP), providing a pathway to Chartered Physicist (CPhys) status
  • Hands-on training at the UCL Observatory (UCLO), one of the UK's leading student astronomical facilities
  • UCL Physics and Astronomy is ranked in the top 4 in the UK by QS World University Rankings by Subject
  • Close association with the Royal Astronomical Society and involvement in major international research collaborations

Curriculum and Modules

The BSc Astrophysics curriculum is structured across three years, with 120 credits per year totalling 360 credits for the full degree. Compulsory modules in the first two years establish a solid foundation in mathematics, classical physics, and quantum physics, while progressively introducing astronomy and astrophysics-specific content.

Physics of the Universe

15 credits

A first-year compulsory module introducing fundamental concepts in astrophysics, covering the structure and evolution of the universe, stellar physics, and cosmological principles.

Practical Astronomy

15 credits

A first-year hands-on module where you develop observational skills using the UCL Observatory, learning techniques for data acquisition, image processing, and astronomical measurement.

Astrophysical Processes

15 credits

A second-year module exploring the physical mechanisms that govern astrophysical phenomena, including radiative transfer, fluid dynamics in astrophysical contexts, and nuclear processes in stars.

Practical Astrophysics

15 credits

A second-year laboratory module building on your first-year practical experience, focusing on advanced observational techniques, data analysis methods, and scientific reporting in astrophysics.

Physical Cosmology

15 credits

A third-year compulsory module covering the physics of the expanding universe, the cosmic microwave background, dark matter, dark energy, and the large-scale structure of the cosmos.

Interstellar Physics

15 credits

A third-year module examining the physics of the interstellar medium, including gas dynamics, dust properties, star formation processes, and the lifecycle of matter in galaxies.
