Mining Engineering MEng at the University of Exeter
The MEng Mining Engineering programme is delivered by the internationally established Camborne School of Mines (CSM), a combined mining school and geoscience department based at the University of Exeter's Penryn Campus in Cornwall. You will study a broad range of topics including the underlying maths, digital, geology and physics skills that inform engineering, as well as mine design, operations, processing, services, automation, safety, economics, environment and social governance.
The programme places a strong emphasis on hands-on learning, with extensive fieldwork opportunities at local mine sites — both surface and underground — across the South West and the wider United Kingdom. As part of your degree, you will complete an industry work placement in a mining environment between your second and third years, gaining valuable real-world experience in mine operations or business divisions of mining companies.
The fourth year of the MEng programme offers specialist modules that underpin your final individual research project. This research-focused project allows you to develop a deep level of understanding in an area of your choice, working closely with academics who are experts in their fields, preparing you for advanced roles in the global mining industry.
Key Programme Highlights
- Top 20 in the world for Mineral and Mining Engineering in the QS World University Subject Rankings 2025
- The only mining engineering degree currently offered in the United Kingdom
- Mandatory industry work placement in a mining environment between Years 2 and 3
- Access to specialist facilities including geochemical and mineralogical labs, surveying equipment, GIS software, and a materials engineering laboratory
