Art History & Visual Culture and Classical Studies BA

The BA Art History & Visual Culture and Classical Studies program at the University of Exeter offers a multidisciplinary approach to understanding the development of human thought and creative expression. By combining these two fields, students acquire the essential tools to interpret works of art, architecture, and design, as well as various images and objects from both contemporary and historical contexts. In the Classical Studies component, students explore the culture and philosophy of the ancient world through its literature, art, and artifacts. A significant feature of this program is that all primary texts are usually taught in translation, meaning there is no initial requirement to study Latin or Greek. However, the degree provides the academic flexibility for students to study a classical language in depth for at least two years if they choose to do so. This allows for a more direct engagement with ancient sources while maintaining a focus on broader cultural and historical analysis.
