Japanese MA

The university is the only institution in Scotland to offer undergraduate honours degrees in Japanese, providing an interdisciplinary experience in East Asian studies that includes the languages, histories, and cultures of China and Korea. Students can tailor the program to their interests by selecting courses in pre-modern and modern history, politics, international relations, religion, literature, theatre, cinema, and linguistics. Excellent resources include the East Asian Studies Collection, which contains more than 50,000 print and digital items, with over 5,000 specifically in Japanese. The program is supported by active student organizations such as the Japan Society and the Anime Society, and the university frequently hosts visiting Noh masters for performances and workshops. By integrating linguistic mastery with diverse academic perspectives, the program prepares graduates for global careers requiring deep cultural and analytical expertise.
