Program Overview: MA Youth and Community Work
The MA Youth and Community Work at the University of East London is a professionally validated programme that prepares you for a rewarding career working with young people and communities. It is one of only two programmes in London offering a postgraduate JNC (Joint Negotiating Committee) qualification as part of a master's degree, giving you accredited professional youth work status upon graduation.
This programme uniquely combines rigorous academic study with extensive practice-based learning, requiring 400 mandatory hours of supervised placement across two different organisational settings. Typically, you will attend university-based sessions on Tuesdays for lectures, seminars, and tutorials, while the remainder of the week is dedicated to your professional placement.
Professionally validated by the National Youth Agency (NYA), the programme is delivered by experienced practitioners with over 50 years of combined experience in community and youth work. You will develop the skills to build trust, manage challenging behaviour, and mentor young people within London's diverse and dynamic communities.
Key Program Highlights
- Professionally validated by the National Youth Agency (NYA) with JNC accredited status upon completion
- 400 mandatory hours of supervised practice learning across two different placement settings
- Taught by experienced practitioners with strong links to the youth and community work sector
- One of only two London providers offering a postgraduate JNC qualification within a master's programme
Curriculum and Modules
The MA Youth and Community Work curriculum integrates theoretical learning with hands-on professional practice. The programme features four core modules alongside placement-based fieldwork, covering youth work policy, group work principles, management and supervision, and practitioner research. University-based sessions are complemented by field trips to community projects in action.
Your first supervised placement of 200 hours in a youth or community work setting, where you apply theoretical knowledge to real-world practice and develop professional competencies under the guidance of experienced practitioners.
A second 200-hour supervised placement in a different organisational setting, allowing you to broaden your experience, deepen your professional skills, and work with diverse groups of young people and communities.
This module explores the foundational theories and principles underpinning youth and community work practice, including group work methodology, informal education approaches, and the values that guide professional engagement with young people.
An in-depth examination of contemporary youth work policy, management frameworks, and supervision practice. You will critically analyse policies affecting young people and develop skills in leading multi-agency and multi-disciplinary teams.
This module enables you to undertake a small-scale research project relevant to youth and community work within your professional practice context. Your enquiry should provide value to a youth or community work organisation and contribute to the development of provision for young people.
