The Psychology of Mental Health MSc at the University of Dundee prepares you with the essential theoretical knowledge and research skills required to understand and investigate the determinants of people's mental health. This program provides a pathway to study at PhD level, particularly for those looking to specialise in a doctorate in clinical psychology or other applied psychological practice. It is currently the only psychology master's course in Scotland to offer work experience over two semesters as part of a non-clinical research or work-based placement. Curriculum & Modules

The curriculum combines core modules, elective advanced modules, and a substantial research dissertation. You will develop advanced quantitative and qualitative research methods skills while exploring the psychological determinants of mental health across the lifespan.

Research Methods in Psychological Science

Core Module

Covers the basic skills and knowledge necessary to carry out research in psychological science, including empiricism, the research cycle, and the critical evaluation of scientific claims in the published literature.

Quantitative Research Methods

Core Module

Provides an understanding of statistical analyses used in psychological research, with quantitative methods explained at a high conceptual level to help students see links between various analyses.

Social Determinants of Health

Core Module

Focuses on how social relationships, group memberships such as family and friends, and socio-economic circumstances influence physical and mental health, including the effects of negative and supportive relationships.

Research or Work Placement

Core Module

A 4-to-6-month research or work placement distributed across semesters 1 and 2, where you work with academic staff or with people with mental health needs and non-clinical practitioners in community settings.

Research Dissertation

Core Module

An independently produced piece of psychological research under academic supervision, covering literature review, study design, ethics application, data collection and analysis, and written dissertation.

Developmental Psychopathology

Elective Module

An introduction to psychological and neurological disturbances and disorders occurring in infancy and childhood, including diagnosis of mental disorders and psychological assessment of young children.
