Program Overview: English and History MA (Hons)
The English and History MA (Hons) at the University of Dundee is an integrated undergraduate degree that combines the study of English literature from the medieval period to the present day with social, cultural, and political history spanning the early modern era to the contemporary world. This joint program gives you a very wide range of modules to choose from across both disciplines, allowing you to tailor your studies to your developing interests.
In the English component, you will develop skills in literary analysis, studying genres from Shakespeare to science fiction, Romantic poetry to contemporary poetry, and Victorian novels to Hollywood films. The history component focuses on primary source analysis and critical engagement with key historical debates, covering the British Isles, Europe, the Americas, Africa, and India.
Please note that the MA (Hons) is a four-year undergraduate degree awarded by Scottish universities. It is equivalent in level to an English Bachelor's degree with Honours and should not be confused with a postgraduate Master's degree. Graduates emerge as confident, intellectually engaged individuals equipped with strong analytical, communication, and critical thinking skills.
