Materials Science and Engineering MEng

The MEng Materials Science and Engineering is a four-year full-time program designed to develop future leaders in materials science who can help solve world sustainability challenges. Students discover how metals, glasses, polymers, ceramics, and composites work throughout their entire lifecycle, building in-depth knowledge of material properties, processing, and performance. The curriculum comprises taught modules complemented by optional modules that allow students to explore specific areas of interest. A distinctive feature of the program is the major individual research project undertaken in the fourth year, enabling students to investigate a topic of personal interest while developing advanced research capabilities. Throughout the degree, students build essential project management and teamworking skills through collaborative work and laboratory practice. Assessment employs a diverse range of methods including examinations, written assignments, oral presentations, computer-based tests, and laboratory and project reports, ensuring comprehensive evaluation of both theoretical understanding and practical competence. Graduates are prepared for roles across a huge range of industries and research areas, including healthcare, Formula One, aerospace, and technology sectors. This integrated approach ensures students emerge with the scientific knowledge, practical skills, and research experience necessary to contribute meaningfully to the field of materials science and engineering.
