Program Overview: BA in German Studies
The Bachelor of Arts in German Studies at the University of Arizona is designed to familiarize students with the German language and the cultures and histories of German-speaking communities. Students acquire language proficiency in German alongside a broad background in German culture, history, and literary studies.
Designated a German Center of Excellence by the American Association of Teachers of German, the Department of German Studies provides students with a diverse, interdisciplinary education. The German Studies BA requires a minimum of 32 units beyond the two introductory 100-level language courses. German 101 & 102: Introduction to German Language and Culture

German 201 & 202: Intermediate German

Upper-Division Electives (300/400-Level)
12+ UnitsAdvanced elective courses allowing students to explore specialized areas including cultural history, religion in German culture, the Enlightenment, and topics in German studies. A minimum of 12 units of upper-level courses must be completed in residence.
Senior Capstone (GER 498)
1-3 UnitsA culminating capstone experience in which students integrate knowledge gained throughout the program. Honors students may complete an Honors Thesis (GER 498H) as an alternative.
