Mission
KIT – The Research University in the Helmholtz Association
We create and impart knowledge for the society and the environment.
From fundamental research to applications, we excel in a broad range of disciplines, i.e. in natural sciences, engineering sciences, economics, and the humanities and social sciences.
We make significant contributions to the global challenges of mankind in the fields of energy, mobility, and information.
Being a big science institution, we take part in international competition and hold a leading position in Europe.
We offer research-based study programs to prepare our students for responsible positions in society, industry, and science.
Our innovation efforts build a bridge between important scientific findings and their application for the benefit of society, economic prosperity, and the preservation of our natural basis of life.
Our working together and our management culture are characterized by respect, cooperation, confidence, and subsidiarity. An inspiring work environment as well as cultural diversity characterize and enrich the life and work at KIT.
Excellence
KIT is one of eleven Universities of Excellence in Germany. Our concept “The Research University in the Helmholtz Association I Living the Change”, with which we were successful in the Excellence Strategy Competition of the Federation and the Federal States in 2019, focuses on enhancing top-level research in the complete range from fundamental research to application. This shall be achieved, among others, by 100 new professorships, intensive dialog with society, and offering reliable career paths to young scientists.
In the competition, KIT succeeded in acquiring two research clusters: The cluster “3D Matter Made to Order” covers the production of smallest components and systems by nanoprinting, “Energy Storage Beyond Lithium” focuses on novel energy storage systems of increased performance.
KIT – The Research University in the Helmholtz Association
KIT is “The Research University in the Helmholtz Association.” As one of the biggest science institutions in Europe, the only German University of Excellence with national large-scale research facilities combines a long university tradition with program-oriented top-level research. The university world, whose roots date back to 1825, stands for the broad range of disciplines and knowledge, whereas the Helmholtz world traditionally focuses on the big and urgent challenges facing society, science, and industry. We seek to contribute to the success of big projects of our society by providing excellent academic education, conducting top-level research, and producing innovations. These big projects cover future energy supply, sustainable mobility, and smart and secure technology for the information era.
