Program Overview: Electrical and Electronic Engineering MEng
The Electrical and Electronic Engineering MEng at the University of Aberdeen is a five-year integrated master's programme accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). It provides a direct pathway to Chartered Engineer (CEng) status, equipping you with advanced knowledge in areas such as power systems, robotics, communications, and digital electronics.
The first two years offer a broad foundation across all engineering disciplines, including chemical, mechanical, petroleum, civil, and electrical engineering. From the third year onward, you specialise in electrical and electronic engineering, exploring topics at the cutting edge of technology innovation including driverless vehicles, automation, robotics, and next-generation mobile data transmission.
Teaching is supported by dedicated laboratories for satellite communications, robotics, lasers, HVDC power systems, and computer-aided design. Located in Aberdeen, one of the UK's 13 engineering hot spots with over 8,000 engineering businesses in the region, the programme offers exceptional industry connections and placement opportunities.
Key Program Highlights
- IET-accredited programme providing a direct route to Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with the Engineering Council
- Interdisciplinary first two years allowing you to experience all five engineering disciplines before choosing your specialisation
- State-of-the-art research labs in HVDC Power Systems, Robotics, Laser Technology, and Electronic Communications
- Strong industry links in one of the UK's top engineering regions with credit-bearing work experience opportunities
Curriculum and Modules
The MEng curriculum is structured to build from broad engineering foundations in the first two years to advanced specialisation in electrical and electronic engineering in years three through five. The final year features a substantial individual research project that can be undertaken in Aberdeen, abroad, or with an industry partner.
Introduces fundamental concepts of electrical and electronics engineering, covering DC circuit analysis, electronic amplifiers, digital circuits, optoelectronics, and AC theory within a practical engineering context.
Develops the essential mathematical tools required for engineering analysis, including calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, and numerical methods applied to engineering problems.
Covers design, analysis, and control of digital systems through practical implementation, including sensor interfacing with microcontrollers and C++ programming for integrated embedded systems.
Covers both continuous-time and discrete-time (digital) state-space control of linear systems, providing the theoretical and practical foundations for modern control engineering applications.
A concentrated design and reporting exercise requiring project management, team collaboration, and technical design skills, incorporating interdisciplinary aspects related to professional engineering activities.
