Program Overview: Civil Engineering BEng at UCL

The Civil Engineering BEng at UCL covers all the major fields of civil engineering, including structures, geotechnics, fluids, design, transport studies, surveying, and materials. The programme adopts a project-based learning approach with residential field trips throughout, providing hands-on experience from your very first year.

This degree is part of UCL's Integrated Engineering Programme (IEP), a pioneering teaching framework that fosters both specialist and interdisciplinary activities. You will choose an IEP Minor topic from a broad range of disciplines, including environmental engineering, ocean engineering, management, finance, public policy, and programming.

Studying civil engineering at UCL means immersing yourself in the vibrant engineering ecosystem of London, with access to prestigious institutions and industry partners. The flexible programme structure empowers you to tailor your studies to your interests and career aspirations through specialised modules and interdisciplinary minors.

Key Program Highlights

  • Accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators, comprising the Institution of Civil Engineers and the Institution of Structural Engineers
  • Integrated Engineering Programme (IEP) framework combining specialist civil engineering with an interdisciplinary minor of your choice
  • Residential field trips each year, including surveying in Wales and construction management on a bespoke site
  • Option to transfer into the Civil Engineering (with Year in Industry) BEng pathway upon securing a placement

Curriculum and Modules

In each year of your degree, you will take individual modules normally valued at 15 or 30 credits, totalling 120 credits per year. A 30-credit UCL module is equivalent to 15 ECTS credits. The curriculum balances compulsory core modules with optional choices that increase as you progress through the programme.

Engineering Mathematics and Analysis

30 credits

Develops the mathematical foundations essential for civil engineering, including calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations. You will share mathematics classes with students from other engineering disciplines.

Structural Mechanics and Design

30 credits

Covers the principles of structural analysis and design, including forces, moments, stress, and strain in engineering structures. You will learn to apply these concepts to real-world structural problems.

Geotechnics and Soil Mechanics

15 credits

Introduces the behaviour of soils and their interaction with engineering structures, covering topics such as soil classification, consolidation, shear strength, and foundation design.

Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics

15 credits

Explores the principles of fluid statics and dynamics as applied to civil engineering, including pipe flow, open channel flow, and hydraulic structures.

Transport Systems and Surveying

15 credits

Introduces the fundamentals of transport engineering, network analysis, and land surveying techniques used in civil engineering projects and infrastructure planning.

Final Year Research Project

30 credits

A substantial independent research project in your final year, allowing you to apply your accumulated knowledge and skills to an original engineering investigation under academic supervision.

IEP Minor Elective Topics

Environmental Engineering Sustainable Building Design Management, Finance and Accounting Programming and Computer Science
