Program Overview: Life Sciences with a Modern Language BSc
This BSc program enables you to develop your language skills while covering a diverse range of topics within the biological sciences. The course is structured as two-thirds biological sciences learning and one-third modern language study, giving you a distinctive interdisciplinary profile that enhances your academic and professional prospects.
You can choose from French, German, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, or Mandarin for the language component, which includes a dedicated year abroad on a research placement. Placements are available at around 20 universities throughout Europe, as well as in China and Japan, allowing you to apply your language skills in a real-world research setting.
The program is ideal if you are committed to studying the life sciences but have not yet decided on the area in which you want to specialise. The broad first-year curriculum allows you to explore multiple biological disciplines before choosing your specialism from a position of greater knowledge.

Curriculum & Modules
The curriculum combines a strong foundation in biological sciences with progressive language training across all four years. Teaching methods range from lectures and tutorials to practicals and research projects, with the proportion of independent study increasing each year. Year 1 contributes 10% to your overall degree mark, Year 2 contributes 30%, the placement year contributes 10%, and the final year accounts for the remaining marks.
Foundations of Life Sciences
Core — Year 1An introduction to the essential concepts across biological sciences, including cell biology, genetics, and organismal biology. Provides the foundational data handling and laboratory skills required for all biological scientists.
Modern Language Studies (Chosen Language)
Core — Years 1-4Approximately one-third of your study time is devoted to your chosen language. You learn alongside other language degree students, developing proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
Science Communication
Core — Year 2Develops your ability to communicate scientific concepts effectively to diverse audiences. Covers written and oral presentation skills essential for careers in science and beyond.
Specialist Biological Sciences
Core — Year 2You transfer onto a specialist biological or biomedical sciences pathway chosen with the guidance of academic staff. Lecture units are assessed by essay-based exams and coursework elements.
Overseas Research Placement
Core — Year 3Subject to satisfactory academic performance and placement availability, you spend this year overseas at a partner university. You complete a scientific report and undergo an oral examination on your research.
Final Year Research Project
Core — Year 4An independent in-depth research project that may involve supervised practical work in a laboratory or an e-learning based investigation. Assessed through a presentation and a written report, accounting for one-quarter of the overall degree mark.
