Program Overview: Life Sciences with a Modern Language BSc
The BSc Life Sciences with a Modern Language at The University of Manchester enables you to develop your language skills while covering a diverse range of topics within the biological sciences. This interdisciplinary program is ideal if you are committed to studying the life sciences but have not yet decided on the area in which you want to specialise, allowing you to make that decision from a position of greater knowledge at the end of the first year.
The course consists of two-thirds biological sciences learning and one-third modern language learning. You can choose from French, German, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, and Mandarin for the language component of the course, which includes a year abroad on a research placement at one of 20 partner universities throughout Europe, China, and Japan.
You will benefit from a wide range of teaching and learning methods including lectures, tutorials, practicals, and research projects, culminating in a final year independent research project. The combination of units taken in the first year also enables you to transfer to most of the University's biological and biomedical sciences courses if you wish to change direction.

Curriculum & Modules
This modular program combines compulsory and optional course units across biological sciences and your chosen modern language. Most science units are assigned 10 credits, and you will take 120 credits each year. Approximately one-third of your time is devoted to language study, with language credit loads varying by language choice.
Foundations of Biological Sciences
20 creditsA broad introduction to biological sciences covering key concepts including cell biology, genetics, evolution, and ecology, providing the foundation for all subsequent study.
Laboratory and Data Skills
10 creditsIntroduction to essential data handling and laboratory skills required for all biological scientists, including practical techniques and statistical analysis.
Modern Language (Chosen Language)
20-40 creditsLanguage study units in your chosen modern language, taken alongside students from a variety of language degree programs. Credit load varies: 20 credits per year for most European languages, 40 credits for Japanese and Mandarin.
Science Communication

Year Abroad Placement

Admission Requirements
Entry to the BSc Life Sciences with a Modern Language is competitive, requiring strong academic performance in the sciences and evidence of language aptitude.
